Pizza & Crayons: A Lesson in Fundamentals
Text: Hebrews 6:1-3

Thesis: To preach ideas fundamental to faith & Scripture.

Introduction:

1. Do you have a good understanding of what we believe?
2. Can you speak of those things with conviction?

Discussion:

We need to know that…

I. DOCTRINE IS IMPORTANT.
A. Divine doctrine is sound, healthy (Tit. 2:1).
B. Our goal is to mature beyond elementary doctrine (Heb. 6:1).
C. Some teach different doctrines (Mt. 15:1 Tim. 1:3), but for what motive?
1. Some offer God lip serve but don’t have a true interest in godliness (Mt. 15:8-9).
2. Some have selfish ambitions (Rom. 16:17-18).
3. Some are deceived children (Eph. 4:14).
4. Some are puffed up with pride (1 Tim. 6:3).

II. DIVISION IS INAPPROPRIATE.
A. Unity is precious (Ps. 133:1-3).
1. God wants us to attain unity (Eph. 4:13).
2. We need to eagerly desire it (Eph. 4:3).
B. But division is real (1 Cor. 1:10).
1. We must watch and avoid divisive persons (Rom 16:17).
2. Signs to identify divisive persons.
a. Do they have a respect for God’s word?
b. Do they ask many skeptical questions about the Bible but provide few
answers?
c. Do they desire to study God’s word for answers, or do they feel they have
sufficient knowledge?
d. Do they view others who disagree with them with contempt?
e. Do they use name calling methods to attack and discredit?

[Healthy doctrines and unity are good, but God also wants our devotion.]

III. DEVOTION IS IMPERATIVE.
A. Life is filled with distractions.
1. Martha was distracted for worldly care (Lk. 10:40-42).
2. Cares, riches and pleasures are the thorns that choke our faith (Lk. 8:14).
B. God wants our undivided attention (1 Cor. 7:34). It must be sincere and pure (2 Cor.
11:3).
